About Bert Scanlon

Bert's interest in CCTV didn't start in a classroom or on a training course, it started as a child, taking an interest in how camera systems actually worked. Over the following twelve years, that interest grew into genuine hands-on knowledge spanning both eras of the industry: the analogue systems of tape heads, multiplexers, and time-lapse VCRs that most installers today have never touched, and the modern IP networks, PoE cabling, and cloud-connected systems that define the industry now.

That range is unusual. Most installers specialise in one era or the other. Bert works comfortably across both, which is why UK Safety Camera Network is one of the few companies still able to properly service and maintain legacy analogue systems that many providers would simply tell you to replace, alongside designing and installing modern high-definition IP networks for homes and businesses.

Building UK Safety Camera Network

UK Safety Camera Network began with a simple observation: a poorly lit alleyway near Bert's home, where people could disappear from view after committing a crime, with no camera coverage and no easy way for police to piece together what happened. The idea was straightforward, a connected network of community safety cameras, giving people somewhere to turn and giving police one place to go for evidence, rather than knocking on five separate doors.

Turning that idea into a working company meant learning far more than just camera installation. Bert taught himself company law and governance to properly establish USCN as a company limited by guarantee, a structure chosen deliberately so that no shareholder or investor could ever divert the company's profits away from its public safety mission. He built the phone systems, the website infrastructure, the data protection processes, and the operational systems that let USCN run properly from day one, not as an afterthought.

The Mission

UK Safety Camera Network exists to provide free public safety cameras to communities that need them, funded by professional CCTV installation work for homes and businesses across Surrey and South West London. Every commercial job, whether it's a new home security system, a business installation, or servicing a decades-old analogue system nobody else will touch, helps fund cameras that protect the wider community at no cost to residents.

Bert takes a hands-on, personal approach to every job, from designing bespoke camera placement to keep blind spots out of a system, to properly explaining privacy, data protection, and the law around CCTV to every customer, something he considers just as important as the hardware itself.

Beyond Installation

Alongside standard residential and commercial work, Bert has developed specialist services that most installers simply don't offer — including dedicated legacy CCTV system maintenance for older analogue equipment, and tailored security and monitoring solutions for equestrian yards and riding schools, covering everything from stable and tack room security to remote livery camera access and event broadcast systems.

At the centre of all of it is a simple belief: that security shouldn't come at the cost of privacy, and that community safety shouldn't be reserved for those who can afford it.
